Good laptop but not so much for gaming
When I ordered this laptop I wasn’t looking to get back into gaming. It is a reasonably priced laptop with quality graphics that I wanted for watching movies and videos and to look at art websites. It is perfect for this. The graphics on this laptop are beautiful and the use of the laptop is very intuitive. It is a very good choice for those things. However, this is being sold as a gaming laptop. They definitely need to stress the “cloud” part of “cloud gaming laptop” a little more because this is not the thing for people who want to download their Steam library. This is for people who are doing cloud based gaming. I could not get Steam to install on this laptop. At least, not the full version of Steam. I can install the GooglePlay version of Steam which is not very good. This is not a deal breaker for me as I did not order this for gaming but it does have enough RAM and storage to meet the Steam requirements so I don’t know why we’re stuck with the terrible phone app version on GooglePlay. So, if you need a laptop that has good graphics, works well for watching movies and tv, is intuitive to use, and doesn’t get hot, this is for you. If you’re a cloud gamer, you’re probably fine. If you use Steam for most of your games, this isn’t the thing you want.

One of my Top Overall Laptops
I have owned/managed many Windows and Chrome laptops – everything from the small School Chromebooks to Windows based gaming laptops and higher priced models like LG Gram.Given my experience with the slow and small School Chromebooks, I was slightly hesitant on this model. But I can honestly say it is one of my top overall laptops. The key word is “overall”. There are many other higher priced laptops with faster processors and additional features. But the majority of users are checking social media, playing browser based games, accessing websites, word processing, or even light gaming. For this group of people – you want a decent speed laptop, but most importantly you want a nice quality touchpad, good display, lightweight, and reasonable cost. This laptop checks all of the boxes. And for the group of people who want to play high end games, the cloud gaming subscriptions take care of that for you.Controller – The laptop came with decent wired controller. Unfortunately, it is not wireless or Bluetooth – it needs to be plugged in. With that said, it has a nice feel and worked right away in any games I played. The laptop itself has a nice two tone brushed steel look. The laptop is very light for it’s size. Comparing with an LG Gram laptop with 16 inch monitor, they are pretty close in weight. The laptop has two USB-C ports, 1 standard USB, HDMI port, Ethernet jack, and a headphone jack. The screen is not glossy, it has more of a matte look. The colors are bright and vibrant. Videos and even general web browsing look great on the screen. The mouse works well, with no accidental clicks when using the keyboard. The keyboard lights are a very fun feature. You can customize the keyboard to change multiple colors, pick a single color, set your own color segments. The speakers are pretty decent for a laptop in this price range. It is pretty easy to max out the volume, but the sound is plenty loud at full volume. At full volume, the sound is still clear with no popping or distortion. After getting signed in and setup the first time, a restart (or start from full shutdown) only takes a couple of seconds. Web browsing and app navigation is snappy. Everything is instant. General use is great. With the purchase of the Chromebook, you are supposed to get a month of cloud online gaming free. I tried to accept the offer, but for some reason it kept telling me I was not eligible. I don’t know what that was about, but what I did find out – the Chromebook runs Steam, and pretty good too!I did not even realize that Steam was available on Chromebooks, but I installed it and had instant access to my library. My games are more “casual”, but they all loaded without issue and played great! Google has a list of “supported” games on Steam, but none of my games were on the supported list – and all played great. This is giving me another reason to ditch Windows.Very nice laptop. Highly recommend!

Solid, fast Chromebook
The Acer Chromebook 516 GE Cloud Gaming Laptop is nice and big, but it’s lighter than one would think. The case is aluminum (I think). It feels substantial and has a finish that isn’t easily smudged. It has more ports than I was expecting, including an ethernet port. There are two type C ports, but there’s only one old school USB port, which is needed for the mouse’s dongle when hubs uses it (he doesn’t like the touchpad). Since my headset also needs that same port, he’ll have to choose between those two devices (unless we can dig up an old headset, because this has a headset jack, too). The included gaming controller uses type C.Keyboard: The keys are nice and “bouncy”… I guess I’d call it responsive. It’s a nice size, but I wish it were larger—it’s as large as it can be, because the speakers are on either side of the keyboard. The keyboard is backlit. It is not overly bright, but it can be seen in a dimly lit room, and the color can be personalized, which is nice.Battery: It lasted all day, used for browsing the web, emailing, streaming movies.Screen: It’s very nice! But it’s not touchscreen (hard to get used to not having it). Colors looked rich and the picture was crisp when I was watching a movie. The picture looked great on my OTA tuner/dvr’s app.Sound: The sound is much richer than my cheap little laptop, but it’s not as great as my desktop’s sound. I had no problem clearly hearing speech and music was adequate.Camera: I have not used this Chromebook on a Zoom or Teams call as yet, but if/when I do, I’ll evaluate for you.Gaming: No idea. My boy is the gamer, but I’m sad to report he won’t be playing any games until his bedroom is clean, so… could happen today, could be weeks. Once he can, I’ll give him a go and report back. I will tell you I enjoyed playing Bubble Birds. hahaha!Printing: Some printers are incompatible with Chromebook. Mine isn’t compatible (Canon MG3600), so there’s no printing from Chromebook for me.I have not used a Chromebook, so it’s taking some getting used to (e.g., I still haven’t been able to use my phone from the Chromebook like I do from my desktop and laptop via Phonelink, but I’m willing to concede it’s likely user error.), but even in the meantime, I can tell you this is a quality machine. Everything runs so fast, even with many things open and running at the same time.

Nice Laptop. Fast. Good Quality.
This is my first Chromebook and I was impressed by the simplicity of the operating system. It’s refreshing not to have the bulk of Windows. The Wifi 6 works great and I had no issues connecting and zipping around the internet. We were able to get the gaming features to work quickly. I was just a little disappointed with the gaming experience, as this is advertised as a “Gaming Laptop”. I guess I was expecting a miracle in online gaming, but when you are dealing with Steam and other online gaming platforms, it is what it is. My kids are used to “online gaming” and think it’s great, but for me it’s requires too much patience. I miss the old “installed” games and the DVD-Roms. For this Laptop and for a smoother gaming experience, we set the graphics setting a little lower to get the games to respond quickly. Now, honestly, on the lower graphics setting, the graphics were still really good and once I got past the initial disappointment I had no issue with the graphics. I think much of the fault lies with the online gaming servers themselves. They are temperamental and laggy, so to get them to function smoothly, you have to turn the graphics settings down. I don’t think it’s the fault of the computer itself. I found the Joystick that’s included with the laptop to be overall disappointing. It’s wired and doesn’t feel like the highest quality, but it works fine. The laptop itself is beautiful, substantial, well made, great color, great feel, and a joy to use. This is a good package and, speaking with some experience in laptops, I can honestly recommend it for the cost, for the hardware, and for the internal components.

Fantastic Features!
First, this laptop is an excellent size. The screen is a great size. It is about as big as can be transported conveniently. It is very lightweight. The graphics are clear and true to color. The brightness of the screen has a fantastic range. I am sensitive to excessive light exposure at night. I have found other laptops I’ve used to lack an appropriate range of brightness adjustability. This has a much broader range, so I don’t need to apply an additional, separate screen cover to be able to use it at night. The speakers are excellent! They can play at an impressive volume!I am prone to zombie fingers and have had issues with touchpads when my fingers get cold and dry after prolonged usage. The touchpad on this is sensitive to my touch even when my hands are at their lowest conductivity. I love it!The operating speed is impressive. It connects to the internet well even when signal is less than ideal. It seems very sturdy. I think that this is a fantastic device choice for a variety of uses! The price can’t be beat for what you are getting! The inclusion of the gaming controller is super convenient!

My First Chromebook
This is my first Chromebook and I am pretty impressed. The battery life is on par with similar sized laptops with the use time varying based on what I am doing. I have noticed that some of my preferred apps aren’t available for Chromebook even though it is running an Android system. For example, HBO Max, I need to run it in a web browser because the Android version will only run in phone or tablet mode. If i choose the ‘Re-sizable’ mode, it gives me a warning about possible errors and stays in the tablet mode. The actual boot speed, connectivity and play/response is amazing for a little device. As this is my first cloud driven type of storage/access, I was worried about the speed but thus far, it isn’t disappointing me. As far as gaming, it is sold as a gaming device and the types of games I play, it does just fine. I can’t really comment on any serious games. Overall, this makes a great office/school/base level games computer and I would definitely recommend this over other laptops based on the price and functionality. It also seems to work well when I am using my web version of Office 365. I haven’t attempted to download the Office sweet since I use this for mobile work.

Powerful, light, fast and quiet
A few years ago, it would have been inconceivable for anyone to say “gaming” and “Chromebook” in the same breath. Fast forward to this past year, we now have here a Chrombook from Acer with 16″ WXGA (2560×1600, 4:3 ratio), 120 Hz screen, a dedicated gaming keyboard with special highlights on the WASD keys, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, with a relatively powerful 12th Gen i5-1240p processor that run anything you can throw at it in ChromeOS with absolute ease, and the ability to stream games from nVidia Now and Steam. It’s a gaming notebook on a crazy low budget, supported by cloud resources and a potent i5 that feels extremely smooth and powerful.POWER. The laptop tackles everything in ChromeOS with absolute ease, and with abundant power to spare. In fact, even with more than a dozen Chrome browser windows open, running dual external monitors, with Google meet, photos, zoom, discord and Youtube video all running at the same time, the laptop never breaks a sweat and I have not encountered the fan kicking into high gear. Though there is a built in fan that is constantly running, it is whisper quiet in general and you cannot hear the fan unless you are perched right next to the keyboard or the back vents. And the only instance when I have heard the fan active (but still relatively quiet) is when you block the vents under the laptop with your blanket while running all those apps simultaneously, or if you are doing a first person shooter game on it. And even when the fans are on higher gear, the whole laptop gets a little warm but never hot to the touch, unlike its contemporaries with about the same spec but running Windows.SCREEN. Overall, the screen is a pleasure to have. It’s definitely fast at 120Hz, though the color is not as vibrant as, say, a 4K screen at the same size or have as much constrast as a QLED or OLED screen. In comparison, the screen does not provide as high a constrast and the blacks are really dark gray, not real black. However, with the brightness turned up, videos and images still look great on the screen, just not exceptional.KEYBOARD. The keyboard is relatively fast and responsive. It’s not a mechanical keyboard but it is responsive and has a decent amount of travel. Though the keyboard does flex a bit, it’s barely noticeable and it’s only feel if you really lean into the keyboard. Beyond that, the RBG feature is nice as it allows the keys to shine and look the part of a serious gaming machine.CHROME OS. Now running version128 at 64-bit, Chrome OS is undeniably basic yet incredibly simple and powerful compared to Windows. There are no bloatware and everything just works without any real gimmicks. It doesn’t have Pro or hidden tricks that require a user manual to dig into but what the OS offers, they simply works. In the few months I have owned the laptop, there are constant updates to the OS, both for feature and for basic security updates. It reboots and installs quickly, and doesn’t cause the CPU and the fan to crank like typical Windows updates. At the end of the day, the OS offers probably 95%+ of the functionalities most people would ever need, but without the cost or performance penalty of Windows laptops with identical hardware specs.SUMMARY. An eye-opening experience for me as the Chromebooks I am used to seeing are my kids’ school-issued 11 inch Chromebooks that are slow, bulky, with mushy keyboards, dull screens, and mediocre to sad build quality. Nope, this is the Chromebook for the new generation of power users who opt for simplicity and yet at the same time want the ability to game the AAA titles (albeit with a bit of compromise on the ultimate frame rate). However, unlike the Windows laptop, this one has a big screen, fast refresh rate, light body, solid keyboard and the efficiently and quietness of the Chrome system. Chromebook’s moment under the sun is finally here.

Fantastic machine at a good price, but Chrome OS has it’s limits
I’ve been using this laptop for the last month and I have been absolutely loving it so far with one major caveat. First off, the display is just fantastic. The 16:10 aspect ratio is great for everyday tasks like web browsing, and the 120hz refresh rate makes everything look so smooth and fluid. The colors are extremely punchy without being overly vivid and is easily my favorite aspect of this display. Secondly, the i5-1240p CPU is quite fast and speedy. Despite only being an i5, it’s extremely responsive and runs circles around the i7 in my older laptop from 6 years ago. The keyboard is quite nice too, and feels surprisingly well to type on considering I am used to mechanical keyboards, though the RGB backlight is barely noticeable in moderate to bright lighting. This is also my first time using Chrome OS and, while I like how fast and efficient it is, it does come with quite a big cost in usability.Chrome OS is by no means a bad operating system. It’s designed to be lightweight and efficient making it a good option for those who can do all their work via web apps, and while they do offer an easy way to setup a virtualized Linux environment in the OS for those who need heavier programs, it still feels just a bit too limiting for my taste. At first, I thought I’d be just fine with Chrome OS. I loved it’s responsiveness, and I didn’t mind the limitations at first since I figured I could just do all my intensive work on my desktop anyhow, but not being able to do something basic such as check the temps on the replacement M.2 SSD I installed, or being able to forcibly set the refresh rate to 120hz when the device is not plugged in is just disappointing. Android apps work well, but they’re still just apps, not programs, and while Steam does work well, it just all feels a bit too janky for my taste. The hardware in this machine is just fantastic and capable of so much more, which I know for a fact since I did go through the trouble of trying alternate OSes on this device (which I would not recommend unless you are very technically savvy.) If you just want a simple and fast machine for watching videos, typing up simple documents, or checking social media, then this machine is perfect for you. Anything more than that, the hardware can do it, but the OS can’t.

Great Chromebook!
After using this now for a couple of months I can finally review how I really feel about it. Initially I was really impressed but it has dulled quite a bit after the initial excitement wore off. It’s a great productivity machine it’s plenty fast and operates with great efficiency. The refresh rate on the screen is fantastic but the colors are dull and the matte finish doesn’t do it any favors. It uses the integrated intel iris GPU, it’s ok but it’s not going to give you top of the line performance, but let’s be honest, this is a chromebook and while it’s geared towards gaming it’s on the lower end of the spectrum. A dedicated GPU would certainly make this far better but if you just want a budget machine for being able to play games from time to time this won’t let you down. All in all, it’s solid for the price point but does leave room for major improvements.

Fast, light, and visually appealing.
I really like this laptop for a variety of reasons. It’s very fast, responsive, and I love how the laptop feels. The laptop is pretty light, fits easily in laptop bags, and has a sleek look. The keys are very responsive.I’m using this laptop mainly for my work but I also like to play games so I wanted something with gaming capabilities. I looked into Nvidia but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to do what I want as far as gaming. There is a free version but that involves waiting in queues to play games. I’ll look into the gaming aspect later. As far as the work that I do, I can have multiple things open and running without the laptop lagging one bit which I love. It’s quiet too!It runs off of chrome os which I’m new to. It’s not bad or anything but I do have to adjust just a little. Most of it is going smoothly and quickly. The only thing that I would love is if the back light for the keyboard was more vibrant. It’s just not as bright as I’d want or expect.Last but not least, I’m a little sad there isn’t a number pad. It would be so much more efficient but I guess you’re getting a smaller unit instead that makes it more portable.Other than that, I love everything about this laptop for my specific needs. The quality feels great.

Good laptop but know your compromises.
The media could not be loaded.
Review for the “Acer Chromebook 516 GE Cloud Gaming Laptop”.Issues I had:1. WiFi 6E did not work. The laptop refused to work with my Wifi on the 6GHz bandThis laptop is interesting because it seems a bit ahead of the curve in some aspects that people are not comfortable with, like cloud streaming for example. I used the Nvidia GeForce Now when it first came out and it worked great for my single player games like FFXV. With this laptop I tried again with multiplayer games, But the Geforce Now free tier had too much latency for me.The laptop by itself can handle multiplayer games like Roblox just fine with regards to latency. With respect to compromises there are quite a few that might make you uncomfortable with the laptop.First of all it uses Chrome OS. I have been a Chromebook user for a long time. It’s very simple and in my experience not much goes wrong with it. The only reason I switched to a Windows computer as my main rig, is because of the compatibility with programs I needed to use with my engineering school. The CPU in the laptop is awesome, it’s the intel 1240p and has plenty of power. I have a comparable CPU (1255u) in my smaller 13 inch laptop, and I can play Control at 720p low settings. Though the compromise you will be making with this laptop is relying on Nvidia GeForce Now to play more compute intensive games. Also dedicated GPUs in laptops generally reduce battery life. The webcam is quite good compared to other laptop webcams. It is totally better than my Samsung Galaxy book 2 webcam.I think this laptop is great for someone who wants a laptop with1. good battery life,2. a screen with a tall aspect ratio and a high resolution,3. speakers with good clarity but not very much bass,4. enough power to handle most tasks except demanding games,5. a super simple layout,6. are okay with limited compatibility that is getting better over time.7. and would rather pay $20 per month to play games with Nvidia GeForce Now than buying a separate tower gaming PC.Things I did not like about the laptop:1. No touch screen.2. Small SSD Storage.3. No 120Hz without being plugged in.4. No HDR.5. Weak keyboard backlight.6. WASD marked on the keyboard?? Gamers know where WASD is and marking it just looks bad.

Great ChromeOS device
It’s important to understand the limitations of ChromeOS and your expected use case, but from an overall perspective, this is a great machine.Steam (for linux) works well and several titles I tried worked with no issues, streaming with GeForce NOW (tested on a paid tier) even the controller that was included was better than I expected, though I wish it has been bluetooth rather than wired.Web browsing and general lightweight use is excellent

Super fast laptop with controller
This Chromebook is amazing, out of the box. It is ready to go. It is lightning fast and I have really enjoyed using it for gaming. It comes with a nice controller and you’re ready to go out of the box.

Great Chromebook
Very user friendly and easy to set up. The graphics are amazing, and it has great battery life. Sound quality is also pretty good for a Chromebook. The processor speed is great as well. Overall a great Chromebook for gaming, listening to music or streaming, or for school work too and at a good price.

Nice Chromebook!
So, basically alot of these Chromebooks are designed to help you with getting things done easily, quickly and securely. What i like about this Chromebook is, it has premier cloud gaming with thousands of games and the speed and performance is awesome. Great quality for the value of money. I love the built-in virus protection and the automatic software updates. Also, has many features such as Bluetooth, HDMI 2.1 ports and dual USB type C and A ports, Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5GB Ethernet LAN port. This Chromebook works very well. I love it! Recommendable.

Fantastic CB+ device!
I didn’t buy this for gaming, I needed a Chromebook Plus for myself. I did buy it because it has great specs at a great price, & it didn’t disappoint! Good build quality & a nice Keyboard. Screen is very sharp & good for my eyes, though I EXPECTED it to be Touch based on its original price. Battery life is very long with just web based tasks. Overall a very good purchase in the $500 price range. Included Controller is nice because at the the end of the day, this is my personal device 🙂

Google
If you have a Google phone, a Google one account, and like to game this laptop is great! GeForce now can be a pain occasionally but when it’s working this laptops performanece is flawless. I’ve also been in a pinch on the road and my kid has to use this for his homeschooling and he was able to punch in his account information and get right to it with no confusion or unnecessary steps

Blows Away Anything Else at this Price Point
We’ve owned 5 Chromebooks, including my daily driver, a Pixelbook Go. We’ve also owned several Macbooks over the years. Out of all the Chromebooks in our home, this one blows away anything made by Asus or Lenovo. We’ve had two Lenovos and both had QC issues. We’ve had 3 Asus machines: two were low-end and did the job, minimally. The third Asus we had was mid-range and mediocre in every way. But this Acer, at a slightly higher price point than our most recent Asus purchase, completely blows it away. Great keyboard, fantastic screen (not a touch screen), bright, great color pop. The extra RAM is great. Fast processor. No complaints about this device at all.The standard of comparison, in my view, is the Pixelbook Go. Even though it’s 5 years old, it’s still better than most available Chromebooks. However, this Acer with its newer i5 processor and 16 GB of RAM smokes the Pixelbook Go speedwise, and in almost every other way. So finally one of the manufacturers got the Chromebook right for a change, far below a grand. Seems that the only way to get a decent Chromebook is to spend a thousand buck, but this Acer does a great job at a decent price. No touchscreen, but who cares. If my Pixelbook Go died tomorrow, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another Acer 516 GE.

Great laptop
Currently using this for my job. With Chrome OS there is not any blotware from the manufacture. Everything with the OS is straight and simple. Takes a little getting used to but overall it was money well spent. The graphics and the monitor display are top notch even when attaching a 2k monitor to it.

Bad battery life.
This is a really nice Chromebook. Vibrant, colorful screen, with tons of performance. But that comes at a cost. I get 4 hours or less on a charge, far less than what Acer claims (though they claim it with the screen brightness all the way down, which isn’t even useful in a dark room). If you’re a gamer, you’ll love this if you actually want to stream games to a Chromebook, or play Android games. I do neither, but still needed a powerful Chromebook Plus, and nothing new was on the horizon. Another drawback is the “WASD GaMeR kEyS”, which are different and actually very hard to see if you aren’t a touch typer. It has also crashed twice for unknown reasons.

Worth Every Penny
This Chromebook is everything others say it is. Powerful enough to run Fallout 4 on high resolution through Steam, and runs other Fallout games via Luna with ease. The material is sturdy, and the keyboard is good enough. If you are a Google user, everything this has to offer will go good with your account.
