    4.0 out of 5 stars

Overall a great gaming laptop, but a few massively annoying quirks (4.5/5)

I bought my unit from Micro Center a few months ago, the only differences being mine came with a 1 TB M.2 and 32 GB of ram.Pros:Per-Key RGB keyboardTyping experience is excellent. It’s the best keyboard on a gaming laptop I’ve ever used, and I’ve owned laptops from a handful of different manufacturers, including Razer, Lenovo, Alienware, and MSI. Not the most tactile but the layout and travel are great.Quiet. Fans rarely get loud enough that noise is a problem. Granted, I only play MMOs so I’m really not pushing the components too hard.Trackpad is very accurate, clicks anywhere, and has excellent palm rejection. Best trackpad on a gaming laptop I have ever used. The screen gets nice and bright (500ish nits) and is relatively color accurate. This is NOT the Mini-LED panel, but still looks good.USB-C ports are on the left-hand side so cables don’t get in the way of your mouse (for us righties). There are additional ports on the back. You can undervolt the CPU through Omen software.Cons:This is a bad one – you can’t charge the laptop with USB-C, despite the ports having a power delivery icon. The included power brick is massive and you can only get 5-7 hours of battery with light usage – not enough for a full day at work if you were planning on taking this thing on the go. For how sleek and portable this device is, not being able to charge with USB-C is massively annoying.HP Omen software is clunky. Simple things, like changing keyboard brightness, is a nightmare.Fans are almost always on. There’s a setting in the BIOS to disable the fans always being on, but if this thing is above 40 degrees C (so, always), the fans are on. You can apply a custom fan curve but it only lets you go down to 50% fan speed. Fortunately, the fans are a low pitch and there’s no coil whine.Screen wobble. After all, HP does stand for “hinge problem”. I can’t wait for the hinges to go on this thing after another year. There is only ONE M.2 slot. The speakers are all upper mids and don’t get very loud. There is no way to change performance modes, fan speed, etc. with a keyboard shortcut like on other laptops. They force you to use the Omen software.16:10 display but there’s a massive bottom bezel.
